Choosing a Spraydeck
For new or inexperienced kayakers we recommend the use of a nylon spraydeck, as it is easily removed. Once confident at removing your spraydeck when capsized, you could consider upgrading to a neoprene or combi spraydeck.
For recreational & light touring a nylon spraydeck is adequate. For sea kayaking and longer touring we recommend combi-decks which combine a neoprene deck for shedding water
with a comfortable waist tube.
For whitewater or surf we recommend a neoprene spraydeck.
To form a better seal between the spraydeck and the kayaks some decks have a latex coating on the underside. This reduces the amount of water likely to enter the kayak, but makes the spraydeck more difficult to get on and off your kayak. |

Spraydecks for River Kayaks |
As well as the normal differences in spraydeck size, (usually R4 & R5), there are also different shapes in river kayak cockpits e.g. keyhole deck, big deck.
Most modern river runners use an R5 or Big Deck spraydeck, but if in doubt measure your cockpit, and look at the table below to see what is the most suitable spraydeck. |
